Earlier this month, the U.S. government announced the release of $ 1.45 billion for an audacious project: building the largest solar plant in the world. Seventy thousand households in the state of Arizona are going to get clean energy, with less dependence on electricity generated by burning fossil fuels.
It has been tested new forms of energy production by photovoltaic and thermoelectric. According to the engineer Rodolfo Prados, who works in the company, the technology to be deployed in the U.S. will be cylinder-parabolic collectors - that use sunlight to heat synthetic oil and generate steam, driven to turbines to produce electricity.
Something that really draws attention to the Andalusian sun deck are the two huge and bright towers. With 115m and 160m, they are the first two commercial towers in the world for clean energy production. An unwary might think that the huge plates that spread around are photovoltaic modules, but in fact their function are to work as mirrors that direct sunlight to receptors located on top of each tower. The position of each of the reflectors 1879 changes according to the sun's path throughout the day - just as the sunflowers do in the numerous fields next to the company.
The effectiveness of using the sun's energy for steam is above 92%. For the generation of electricity, the utilization is about 20%. Even on cloudy days, the supply of clean energy is guaranteed to 17,500 homes, thanks to the storage tanks. With technology, it avoids the emission of 20,000 tones of CO2 each year.
It is a pity that the imposing towers cannot be contemplated for a long time - the eyes only resist glare for a couple seconds.
